About The Position

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe, operating GO Transit and UP Express, and the PRESTO fare payment system. The agency is actively building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system. This Equipment Officer role is an in-office position, primarily supporting the Willowbrook and Whitby Rail Maintenance Facilities during evenings and weekends. The team is highly collaborative, valuing in-person co-creation, relationship building, and hands-on partnership. While core business hours are maintained for shared availability, flexibility in start and end times is offered. Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, the Equipment Officer will monitor the condition and performance of the locomotive and coach fleets, ensuring compliance with regulatory, maintenance schedules, corporate, and contractual standards.

Requirements

  • Completion of a diploma in Electrical /Electronic or Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in the maintenance, design and/or manufacturing of equipment used in railroad or transit operations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Heavy locomotive maintenance and passenger railway operations and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability in the interpretation of system drawings including mechanical, electrical and structural drawings.
  • Good organizational, oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of rules and regulations established by Transport Canada (TC), the Federal Railway Administration (FRA) and the American Association of Railways (AAR).
  • Valid Ontario class “G” driver’s licence and meet the corporate standard for a good driving record.
  • Ability to obtain the Metrolinx Operator’s permit.
  • Must successfully complete environmental, safety and any other training required by corporate policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Microsoft Office Suite Experience (Pivot tables, Macros) would be considered an asset.
  • Microsoft PowerBI experience would be considered an asset.
  • LEAN fundamentals training and/or experience would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in developing the requirements and scope of work criteria for the execution and completion of procurement and major overhaul programs for the locomotive and coach fleets.
  • Assisting in developing and recommending designs for implementation on new locomotive and coach equipment acquisitions.
  • Provides input during the establishment of maintenance schedules, procedures, enhancements, and retrofits for new and existing equipment.
  • Developing, recommending, and acting as Project Leader on major locomotive and coach modification programs.
  • Investigating locomotive and coach equipment problems and recommending corrective action.
  • Providing maintenance contractor(s) with technical support for locomotive and coach equipment.
