About The Position

For 50 years, Byrne & Jones Construction has been St. Louis' premier commercial asphalt paving company, specializing in large-scale roadway, parking lot, and site development projects. Our team takes pride in delivering high-quality work, maintaining a strong safety culture, and keeping our fleet in top operating condition. We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain our fleet of asphalt paving and construction equipment. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience working with asphalt pavers, dump trucks, rollers, milling machines, and grading equipment.

Requirements

Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment independently
Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic skills
Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and work in varying weather conditions
Valid driver’s license
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety

Nice To Haves

3+ years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic
Direct experience working on asphalt pavers (e.g., screeds, conveyors, augers)
Experience with dump trucks and commercial diesel engines
Familiarity with grading equipment such as motor graders and skid steers
Strong understanding of hydraulic and electrical systems
Welding and fabrication experience is a plus
CDL preferred but not required

Responsibilities

Perform routine maintenance and preventive service on asphalt pavers, trucks, rollers, skid steers, graders, and related equipment
Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine issues
Repair and replace defective parts, components, or systems
Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with safety standards
Maintain detailed service records and repair logs
Respond to field service calls and emergency breakdowns as needed
Collaborate with the operations team to minimize equipment downtime
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment
