About The Position

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent)
Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.
Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed, if performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
Must be able to report for duty on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations and adverse weather conditions.

Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts
Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics

Responsibilities

Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
Performs emergency spot repairs.
Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
Reads and interprets schematics, diagrams, and blueprints.
Repairs vehicle air conditioning systems.
Troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
