About The Position

EOP Student Assistants help create impactful relationships and foster a supportive environment for our EOP student population at Cal Poly Maritime Academy. The main objective of the Student Assistant role is to provide support to professional EOP staff with the intent to shape a community-oriented atmosphere and instill a sense of belonging in our students. Responsibilities include participating fully in EOP Summer Bridge, planning and facilitating workshops and events within the academic year, providing individual and group advising, making referrals to campus resources as appropriate, collaborating with EOP professional staff – and relevant campus partners - to support student needs, and abiding by campus policies and standards. Student Assistants are also expected to attend a training orientation in late March - mid April on-campus and fully participate in EOP Summer Bridge in late-August. Student Assistants will be able to move in early and live on-campus in the residence hall for the purpose of participating in Summer Bridge, unless excused by the EOP Coordinator. Meals will also be provided to Student Assistants during the duration of the program. Priority is given to EOP students in good academic standing.

Requirements

  • Current EOP student with good participatory status within EOP preferred.
  • A minimum of 2.0 GPA across both the Fall term AND the Spring term. Candidates who earn less than a 2.0 Spring term GPA after grades are posted may become ineligible for the position even after being selected.
  • Desire to help other students facing systemic barriers to success at Cal Poly Maritime Academy.
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to assist students coming from educationally disadvantaged and low-income backgrounds.
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability to support students’ development of college success skills and strategies.
  • Skills and ability to use tact, patience, and courtesy in interpersonal relations, exercise good judgement, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude and boundaries with a strong focus on guiding and supporting students.
  • Strong problem-solving and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of campus resources and services.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of, skills, and ability to handle interpersonal conflicts and apply effective conflict-resolution facilitation skills when necessary.
  • Strong facilitation skills in leading discussions or group sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Participate fully in EOP Summer Bridge program (mid-August)
  • Participate fully in the Peer Mentor training (late March – mid April).
  • Support EOP professional staff in the preparation for various events, including Summer Bridge.
  • Foster a welcoming environment to support new and continuing EOP students during Summer Bridge and the academic year.
  • Serve as a general resource to answer incoming students’ questions and support student experiences, concerns, struggles, and successes.
  • Refer students to next level support services and campus resources when appropriate.
  • Take initiative to lead and participate in group activities as part of Summer Bridge.
  • Actively engage with incoming EOP students during Summer Bridge to encourage belonging and community.
  • Communicate with EOP and relevant campus professional staff regarding concerning student behavior as relevant.
  • Meet with EOP professional staff for team meetings to debrief throughout the academic year.
  • Lead by example by abiding to similar expectations for EOP students.
  • Communicate effectively and punctually with EOP staff.
  • Additional duties as deemed necessary by professional EOP staff.
