About The Position

Carlson McCain is seeking an Environmental Technician to perform various activities supporting environmental and civil engineering projects in Minnesota and throughout our market area. The primary duties will be field-based and will include performing construction oversight and documentation, sampling of various environmental media (soil, water, air), construction staking using GPS survey equipment, and corresponding with clients, contractors, vendors, etc., among other tasks. Other, office-based duties will include data management, report writing, equipment maintenance, etc. This position is based in our Plymouth, MN, office. The job duties will require significant time out of the office and may require out-of-town travel as dictated by the project site location and schedule. Overnight travel time is not expected to exceed 30% on an annual basis.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Ability to work independently under the supervision of professional engineering staff, and communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and coworkers (written and verbal).
  • Ability and desire to work outdoors in a hands-on environment.
  • Capable of working overtime when needed.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • An associates or higher degree in engineering technology, earth science, environmental science, or related discipline.
  • Experience with soil, groundwater, surface water, and air sampling.
  • Experience with civil construction methods and materials, including the ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Familiarity with the Environmental Site Assessment process.
  • Familiarity with the Unified Soil Classification System.

Responsibilities

  • Provide full-time, on-site presence and oversight of construction/remediation activities.
  • Observe and document daily activities performed by contractors, and maintain communication with engineers, contractors, and owner.
  • Interpret construction documents and monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Conduct sampling of soils, groundwater, surface water, soil gas, landfill gas.
  • Conduct GPS surveying and staking.
  • Review, compile, and tabulate analytical and field data.
  • Prepare written reports and memos documenting work activities.
  • Perform routine maintenance of field equipment.
