About The Position

Under close supervision and oversight, the Environmental Technician Associate is responsible for the performance of environmental inspections, data management, and reporting requirements to comply with environmental compliance programs, permit requirements, and corporate environmental policies, standards, procedures and strategic environmental goals within their assigned region, plant and project scope. Responsibilities include performance of inspections, collection of data, and the development of reports to demonstrate compliance with applicable requirements at multiple AEP assets within the assigned region within regulatory time frames. The Environmental Technician is also responsible for informing appropriate AEP staff of issues identified during inspections that must be addressed through internal business processes. NOTE: This is a field position reporting to Columbus, OH Or Zanesville OH location. One may have to work 4 days in the field and 1dayfrom home office or 5 half days in field and 5 half days at home office based on the business need. The Environmental Technician Associate should have at least an awareness of the inspection requirements related to some the following environmental programs: • Coal Combustion Residual Surface Impoundments and Landfills, • Aboveground and underground storage tanks, • Transportation of hazardous materials, • Solid and hazardous waste management, • Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures, • Wastewater, storm water, groundwater, and drinking water sampling, reporting and control, • Oil and chemical spill response and management, • Air emissions monitoring, control and reporting, • Asbestos and PCB management, • Pollution prevention, • Environmental site assessments, and • Emergency planning, and community right-to-know. Key competencies of this position are technical expertise, planning and organization ability, attention to detail, written and oral communication skills and initiative.

Requirements

  • Environmental Tech Assoc (Grade 4) Experience: This position is considered entry level no experience is required, but preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Highly Preferred: Preference will be given to those with experience in Coal Combustion Residual Surface Impoundments and Landfills and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Physical demand is considered light duty.
  • Must have at least an awareness level knowledge of the inspection requirements for programs listed in the job summary above.
  • Travel time is considered 90% within the assigned region and may include overnight stays on occasion.
  • Environmental Tech (Grade 5) Basic Qualifications Experience: Minimum of three years of environmental experience with an associate’s degree. No experience required, but preferred, with a bachelor’s degree..
  • Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver’s license
  • Physical demand is considered light duty.
  • Must have working knowledge of, and adequate demonstrated competence in, the inspection requirements for programs listed in the job summary above.
  • Preference will be given to those with experience in Coal Combustion Residual Surface Impoundments and Landfills and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures.
  • Travel time is considered 90% within the assigned region and may include overnight stays on occasion.
  • NOTE: Availability for weekend on call coverage to assist in managing environmental needs (on Rare occasions only)

Responsibilities

  • Perform environmental inspections under close supervision within the assigned region using AEP approved forms and methods within regulatory time frames. Communicate deviations appropriately.
  • Collect data as needed to support environmental compliance reporting using AEP approved methods.
  • Prepare and submit reports as assigned.
  • Promote and enforce (see something, say something, do something) safe work practices to safeguard employees, contractors, the general public, and Company facilities.
  • Provide support during environmental compliance reviews.
  • Effectively communicate environmental compliance issues to appropriate internal parties.
  • Maintain all environmental documents and records in accordance with environmental content management standards.
  • Since a considerable amount of time will be spend driving from one AEP asset to the other, safe driving techniques and practices are essential.
