About The Position

The Environmental Specialist supports the facility in developing both short- and long-term improvement strategies and coaches all team members on environmental issues. The incumbent ensures the proper management of the environmental processes and provides feedback on strengths and focus areas to the EH&S Manager and Department Managers. In addition, the incumbent will develop and facilitate new environmental training programs. As a member of the EH&S team the Environmental Specialist reports to the EH&S Manager.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand, comply with and communicate all federal, state, and local environmental regulations (EPA, and other State or Local Regulatory Agencies).
  • Knowledge and ability to update environmental policies and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to coach personnel on how to perform audits of job sites, manufacturing, and plant operations.
  • Ability to coach personnel on how to thoroughly investigate spills and development of effective corrective action recommendations.
  • Ability to manage the flow of all required reports and documentation.
  • Demonstrated intermediate skills with the standard features of various personal computer word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet, and other proprietary software).
  • Sound judgment, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a challenging environment.
  • Ability to deliver sustainable and superior results.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 to 4 years of related environmental experience.
  • Working knowledge of Local Air Quality Regulations.
  • Excellent written communication and oral communication skills required.
  • Proficient in spreadsheets, word processing, and database software, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Must be able to complete within six months and maintain certifications: HAZWOPER- 40 Hour DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation RCRA Hazardous Waste Management RSO Training Smoke School (Method 9 Certification)

Nice To Haves

  • Multi-media environmental background (SW3P, SPCC, RCRA) a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining Air Permit, Wastewater Permit, and Stormwater Permit requirements.
  • Performing Periodic inspections, Training, and Sampling as required by above mentioned permits.
  • Ensuring all summary reports are properly completed, as necessary. (TRI, Tier II, SW3P, SPCC, and Annual Waste.)
  • Collaborate with outside Consultants, Agency Representatives, and contractors to achieve permit updates, correct site issues, and manage sampling requirements.
  • Assist the EHS Manager with Industrial Hygiene programs, Silica Sampling Requirements (Silica), and Radiations Safety Programs.
  • Assist the EHS Manger with overall management of EHS department, Environmental Health and Safety Programs as needed.
  • Updating and present employee training programs related to environmental programs, hazardous materials, and industrial waste.
  • Maintaining accurate records related to chemical inventories, complaint investigations, and shipments of hazardous and industrial waste.
  • Keeping informed of current and proposed regulations related to program areas assigned.
  • Maintain all waste profiles with waste contractor/landfill.
  • Maintaining Hazardous waste stream inventory and arranging transportation to authorized disposal sites.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Staying abreast of new regulations pertaining to environmental reporting and conveying changes to plant management staff.
  • Utilizing spreadsheets and other tools for reporting to enhance consistency across plant operations (i.e., spreadsheets, methodologies, and emission calculation techniques, etc.)
  • Actively manage programs to close gaps identified by outside and internal site audits.
  • Function as a liaison between the Site and Federal, State or Local agencies as well as central EHS resources.
  • May require occasional weekend and or Holiday work as well as early or late hours.
