About The Position

The position (K0225884) Understanding of non-point source water quality. Grant management and reporting experience. Supervisory experience. WMS Technical Unit Leader: Provides expert technical guidance to environmental scientists, public and private officials, stakeholders, not-for-profits, university scientists, natural resource agency partners (state and local), in the daily execution of the Watershed Management Section's (WMS) duties and responsibilities related to technical scientific aspects of the Kansas Nonpoint Source Management Plan and subsequent programs. Must influence a team of partners (listed above) to analyze water pollution data and evaluate the various alternatives and techniques for controlling the sources of pollution "often in a sensitive and questionable environment" and provides recommended actions on complex issues. The primary work product is a plan that is diverse in nature, highly complex, in which resources are leveraged or provided for implementation of the developed plan.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Four years of direct experience in environmental science with an emphasis on biology, chemistry, geology or a related natural science.
  • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate: A valid Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate is a condition of employment for all employees of the State of Kansas. Applicants (including non-residents) who receive a formal job offer for a State job, are required to obtain a valid Tax Clearance within ten (10) days of the job offer. A Tax Clearance can be obtained through the Kansas Department of Revenue who reviews individual accounts for compliance with Kansas Tax Law. Responsibilities

  • Section Lead for GIS mapping needs.
  • Uses Geographic Information System (GIS) to analyze watershed land use, identify potential pollution sources and identify and prioritize possible abatement practices.
  • Upon completion of analyses, create necessary watershed maps depicting water resource threats and other related watershed data.
  • The mapping work products are used by natural resource agency scientists, KDHE scientists and WRAPS stakeholder committees to aid in identifying watershed goals and communicating watershed restoration strategies.
  • Works closely with WRAPS committees and natural resource scientists to identify mapping needs and presents work products to local stakeholders and other partners.
