About The Position

This position is responsible and accountable for the efficient and effective operation of a portion of the environmental public health program, Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS), in Martin County. The incumbent is expected to promote teamwork and cooperation within environmental public health and with other work units so that customer expectations are met or exceeded.  The position must demonstrate a professional demeanor at all times; exercise emotional control with external and internal customers; model an attitude of acceptance towards operational changes that will improve processes, and customer and employee satisfaction. The incumbent in this position is expected to continually seek opportunities to improve performance, processes, procedures, and results. Work is performed under the general direction of an Environmental Manager-SES Inspections, Permitting & Investigations:  Inspects various establishments and facilities, including but not limited to, schools, group care facilities, food service establishments, public pools, biomedical waste generators, tanning facilities, tattoo parlors and body piercing facilities.  .  Investigates sanitary nuisance complaints, assists with epidemiological investigations, responds to environmental health emergencies and collects environmental samples.  Gathers evidence for legal cases, prepares notices of violation and assists in the collection of delinquent fines, penalties and license fees.  Confers and works closely with our medical staff to assure that all environmental-related disease clusters are properly investigated to prevent further illness.  Performs site evaluations, permits and inspects septic systems. Administration:   Plans workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization for employees under the direction of the supervisor.  Responds to visits and telephone calls from the public and other agencies, and educates them on indoor air issues, disease control, sanitation, and health regulations. Assists with training co-workers.   Maintains records of work performed. Other:  Attends and participates in staff meetings.  Performs other duties as required in support of the Agency’s vision and mission. Participates in quality improvement meetings.  Gathers evidence and participates in legal action. Performs other related duties as required in support of the Agency’s vision and mission.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.
  • Knowledge of data collection and analysis principles and procedures.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical data.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.
  • Ability to understand and follow legislative policy direction as established in Florida Statutes.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

  • Drivers License
  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental health, environmental science, or a physical or biological science with no less than 30 semester hours of applicable science credits
  • Certified Environmental Health Professional in OSTDS or Registered Sanitarian
  • Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. This may include working in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • Must be willing to physically come in the office daily and perform field work
