About The Position

The Florida Department of Health seeks a human health risk assessor to join the Hazardous Waste Site Health Risk Assessment Program within the Bureau of Environmental Public Health, Public Health Toxicology Section. The incumbent will be a member of the Hazardous Waste Site Health Risk Assessment Program, one of the nation's premier federally funded programs. This position is responsible for assessing and responding to the site and community specific concerns related to potential public health threats from hazardous waste sites or general chemical contaminants. The ideal candidate possesses experience or training in human health risk assessments, toxicology, and environmental investigations. This position involves occasional out-of-town travel averaging about two to three days per month. This position Is responsible for planning, implementing, evaluating, and delivering health education and performing outreach activities to the communities mainly around Florida's hazardous waste sites assigned as at risk. Further, this position facilitates communications between the Department's public health assessment staff, the public, communities, media, other governmental agencies, elected officials, environmental organizations, and other interested parties.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements, evaluates, and delivers health education and performs outreach activities to members of the public and/or the communities in need, especially around Florida's contaminated waste sites assigned as at risk.
  • Serves as a contact for the Florida Choose Safe Places program in conducting environmental assessments and providing guidance regarding potential environmental issues related to childcare locations.
  • Collects and evaluates environmental data to assesses community education needs.
  • Coordinates work plans and monitors activity for the Florida Choose Safe Places program.
  • Facilitates communication between the Department's public health assessment staff and public members/communities around Florida's hazardous waste sites.
  • Assesses communication needs and develops a community-specific, educationally appropriate communication plan and materials.
  • Prepares recommendations regarding eliminating health risks associated with hazardous waste sites.
  • Distills technical documents to simple, understandable summaries.
  • Develops, coordinates, and promotes materials that provide knowledge and behavior modification skills that will contribute to decreased exposure and improve health outcomes.
  • Facilitates communication between the Department's public health assessment staff and the media, other governmental agencies, elected officials, environmental organizations, and other interested parties.
  • Organizes and maintains communication with other governmental agencies.
  • Serves as health promotion and public health education specialist to the media, other governmental agencies, elected officials, environmental organizations, and other interested parties and staff.
  • Develops/updates, distributes, and coordinates training for federal, state, and county partners.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
