About The Position

The purpose of this position is to perform unskilled and semiskilled work in the operation of automated rear loaded garbage truck, street sweeper, or brush truck for the collection solid waste. This position directs the work of environmental service workers assigned to the truck.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Must have 1 year of recent work experience in the operation of large trucks or other heavy equipment.
  • At minimum, must possess Class B CDL.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned.
  • Knowledge of the use of hand and specialized power tools required in the work.
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operative and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work.
  • Skill in making repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Ability to safely move furniture, boxes, equipment, etc.
  • Ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment and to determine proper remedial measures.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods including under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to calculate surface, volumes, weights and measures.
  • Ability to maintain simple records and prepare reports, manual or computerized.
  • Knowledge of the operation and servicing of garbage trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of garbage collection equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of the equipment.
  • Entry level skill in the operation of computer system.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude skills.
  • Ability to direct the work of others sanitation workers.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned.
  • Knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work.
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work.
  • Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to operate all types of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to make decisions to accomplish specific tasks and operations within the scope of the position.
  • Ability to interact with the public effectively, professionally and politely, and with discretion.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department staff and other personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Operates solid waste collection equipment and other sanitation equipment in a safe manner.
  • Utilizes computer software to correctly identify, service, and report on solid waste being collected.
  • Oversees the work of sanitation workers assigned to the truck.
  • Operates a solid waste truck and operates a hydraulic mechanism for compressing and dumping solid waste.
  • Secures truck and collects solid waste from residences and loads into the packer receptacle, cleans area around solid waste containers.
  • Participates in the care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Sets up and navigates prescribed routes to collect solid waste and trash and to transport it to the disposal area.
  • Reports violations of solid waste ordinances to supervisor.
  • Repairs solid waste containers.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to work in a cooperative manner with others.
  • Other duties as assigned.
