About The Position

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Environmental Services Coordinator is responsible for working within County government, as well as with businesses, local governments, and other organizations to assist them in reducing waste, determining how to best dispose of certain waste items, and finding outlets for materials that are produced in their process, other than landfill disposal. This position is responsible for managing the Community Recycling Drop-off sites, maintaining facilities, including scheduled maintenance events and grounds. In addition, this position tracks market data for recycling commodities, monitors trends in recycling and waste reduction. This position is covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Ecology, Education, or 10 years working experience in the recycling commodity industry
  • At least three years’ experience in sustainability, public speaking, marketing, or media relations
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Experience with commodities market, estimating a weighted ton, and data entry
  • Computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Valid Driver’s License to operate County vehicle

Responsibilities

  • Provides advice and education to residents, businesses and other organizations on waste reduction and sustainability by responding to requests, and maintaining a knowledge base.
  • Supports the Communications and Outreach Coordinator by speaking to residents, providing input for newsletters, publications, educational materials, and social media posts.
  • Manages the Community Drop-Off Recycling program, support with writing contracts, assisting with staffing and training issues by interacting with the recycling contractor, and promoting public use of the sites.
  • Maintains a database of local recycling users and recycling commodities offering other diversion services.
  • Performs recycling audits by documenting entire waste streams once recycling load is transported to the local Material Recycling Facility.
  • Assists with setup and tear down of ACDEM collection events, including packaging, labeling, and staging pallets/drums.
  • Documenting illegal dumping: Reporting, clean-up, and enforcement procedures.
  • Develops partnerships, and seeks out businesses doing waste reduction to promote and mentor others.
  • Assists in the development and monitoring of the recycling program budget.
  • Monitors markets by tracking commodities, developing weighted ton estimates, and monitoring current and future outlook for feedstock commodities.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Acts as a liaison with municipalities within the County to share information about ACDEM programs, provide support, and assist with local environmental programs.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
