About The Position

GFT is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our growing Environmental Practice! This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our New York, NY office. GFT’s Environmental team delivers integrated planning, permitting, and compliance solutions that support infrastructure development across North America. With more than 140 professionals in 22 offices, the team guides clients through NEPA and permitting processes, ecological and regulatory assessments, and environmental remediation efforts. Their expertise spans transportation, power, water, and facilities markets — working alongside agencies at federal, state, and local levels. From stream restoration to complex environmental impact statements, GFT helps clients protect resources, manage risk, and meet regulatory requirements with confidence. What you’ll be challenged to do: As an Environmental Scientist with 3+ years of experience, you will support environmental engineering and compliance efforts for infrastructure and development projects across the New York City region. In this role, you will contribute to environmental reviews, perform field investigations and data collection, prepare technical documentation, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on complex projects spanning transportation, transit, municipal, and urban development. Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years experience in the environmental assessment and remediation field, preferably in a consulting role. New York City experience is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental, Chemical, or Civil Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
  • Strong team player with ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast‑paced project environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities at once.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and/or AutoCAD experience is a plus.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification.
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites, including driving within New York City.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with public-sector clients and agencies (e.g., MTA, Metro-North Railroad [MNR], NYCHA, NYCEDC) is a plus.
  • Proficiency with GIS applications (e.g., ArcGIS Pro/Online) for data management, mapping, and spatial analysis is a plus.
  • Familiarity with reviewing project specifications, drawings, and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with hazardous materials sampling and testing requirements (e.g., asbestos-containing materials [ACM], lead-based paint [LBP]) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support environmental remediation and compliance projects involving soil, groundwater, stormwater, and vapor impacts at industrial, commercial, and infrastructure sites.
  • Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) including conducting site reconnaissance, regulatory database and records review, and contributing to Phase I ESA reports.
  • Conduct Phase II ESAs / site investigations, including groundwater monitoring well installation and development; soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling; and field screening, in accordance with approved work plans and health and safety requirements.
  • Coordinate and provide field oversight of subcontractors, including drilling crews, geophysical survey teams, excavation contractors, and remedial construction personnel.
  • Contribute to the development of remedial investigation reports, corrective action plans, remedial action work plans, and closure documentation in accordance with federal, New York State, and New York City regulatory programs.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret environmental data; prepare tables, figures, and summaries for technical reports and regulatory submissions.
  • Assist with compliance efforts related to state and local environmental regulations, permits, and approvals, including tracking permit conditions, monitoring requirements, and corrective actions.
  • Assist in the preparation of environmental management plans, site-specific mitigation measures, and compliance documentation for construction and remediation activities (e.g., HASPs, CAMPs, SWPPPs, SPCC Plans).
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and senior scientists to support multidisciplinary remediation and compliance projects from investigation through closure.
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, and regulatory submittals for internal review and client or agency submission.
  • Participate in quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviews of environmental data and reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory defensibility.
