About The Position

The Environmental Representative is a key technical resource supporting environmental compliance and program management for Lilly Research Labs (LRL) operations in Indianapolis. This role primarily focuses on environmental regulatory compliance, program implementation, and technical leadership for biology and discovery chemistry laboratory operations at the Lilly Technology Center (LTC) North campus. The position serves as the primary technical resource for environmental compliance across LRL business units, ensuring regulatory requirements are met while supporting operational efficiency. The role also provides technical input for capital projects, event investigations, and cross-functional HSE programs. This role strengthens LRL HSE's ability to maintain a strong environmental compliance posture while building deeper organizational capability in environmental program management and regulatory expertise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or a related scientific field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5 years of environmental compliance experience, including 3 years managing hazardous waste and transportation regulations.
  • Background in pharmaceutical R&D, chemical manufacturing, or a related industrial setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep technical expertise in applicable federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., SARA, RCRA, CWA, CAA, HMR/DOT, IATA).
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical R&D or manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with environmental management systems (EMS) and sustainability reporting platforms.
  • Experience supporting capital project environmental reviews and management of change (MOC) processes.
  • Strong data analysis skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SharePoint, Power BI, and database applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to present technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and ability to think and act strategically.
  • Professional certification (e.g., CHMM, CEP, CSP) a plus; willingness to pursue certification desired.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental program assessments and develop technical and administrative solutions to improve compliance posture across LRL operations.
  • Develop, track, and trend key compliance metrics; communicate environmental performance to business personnel and area management.
  • Submit required corporate and regulatory environmental reports (e.g., Credit 360 quarterly and annual submissions).
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for assigned environmental programs, including management of procedures, records, and associated training materials.
  • Provide technical support to business units for the following compliance areas: Air Pollution Control programs and Title V compliance Waste stream characterization, profiling, and approval Manifest signing, tracking, and HMR/DOT requirements Green Chemistry and Chemicals of Concern initiatives SARA, RCRA, and Clean Water Act obligations
  • Identify and assess key environmental risks and aspects critical to the LRL environmental profile; develop and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate and participate in corporate and regulatory compliance audits and inspections.
  • Interact with regulators, auditors, and customers during assessments; lead efforts to address gaps identified from audits and inspections.
  • Participate in HSE Due Diligence site evaluations and third-party assessments.
  • Provide environmental review and technical input for capital projects and engineering change management processes.
  • Evaluate environmental impacts associated with operational changes and new project activities.
  • Partner with Engineering, Facilities, and scientific organizations to ensure environmental requirements are integrated into project deliverables.
  • Participate in environmental business planning and support the local HSE management system, including governance committees and LRL technical teams.
  • Support event analysis and investigation for environmentally significant incidents.
  • Contribute to cross-functional HSE program development and continuous improvement initiatives.
