About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Animal Health, the Environmental Quality Manager provides on-site operational management of the Environmental Quality (EQ) Lab in Boston and Quincy, and oversees EQ technicians at our Central Wharf facility. The Environmental Quality Manager plays a key role in supporting animal well-being by ensuring all habitats are maintained within stable, closely monitored environmental parameters. Responsibilities include monitoring, recording, interpreting, and reporting water quality data, implementing appropriate corrective actions, and ensuring all work aligns with institutional standards and complies with federal, state, and local regulations. This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be Tuesday – Saturday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Work must be conducted onsite, predominantly at our facility in Boston, but candidates must be flexible to work in our facility in Quincy up to one day each week. Availability to work weekends, some holidays, and occasional early morning or late night hours required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental engineering, or biological sciences required.
  • 5 years of vocationally relevant experience in water quality management required.
  • 2 years demonstrated supervisory / leadership experience required.
  • Critical thinking, data analysis, and writing skills.
  • Excellent math skills and computer skills. Experience with Excel and TRACKS.
  • Strong training, mentoring, and team-building skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong leadership skills in routine and emergency situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in chemistry, environmental engineering, or biological sciences preferred.
  • Experience with large-scale aquatic animal life support systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and supervises Environmental Quality Technician(s) in Boston, including goal setting, annual performance appraisals, ongoing performance feedback, scheduling, and professional development.
  • Manages EQ Technician(s) staff schedules, approves time-off requests, and ensures adequate personnel coverage at all times. Reviews and approves bi-weekly timecards in accordance with Finance Department deadlines.
  • Conducts interviews and makes recommendations for hiring new EQ staff.
  • Serves as the EQ liaison to the Volunteer and Intern Program, and coordinates, supervises, and teaches volunteers and interns on EQ processes and methods.
  • Trains, supervises, and completes annual performance reviews of Environmental Quality technician(s).
  • Leads by example, collaborating and fostering a team environment amongst Animal Care Division staff and across other divisions. Works collaboratively with the Animal Health Division (AHD) Manager for operational support across AHD and EQ areas.
  • Monitors environmental quality of exhibits, holding tanks, life support systems, Boston Harbor, discharge water, and municipal water supply using chemical, electrochemical, and microbiological methods, in compliance with Aquarium, local, state, and federal policies and regulations.
  • Records data on environmental quality and distributes to the appropriate Animal Care and Facilities staff.
  • Implements corrective measures for environmental quality problems in consultation with appropriate Animal Care and Facilities staff.
  • Implements, monitors, and maintains aquatic life support system technologies and water-borne pharmaceutical treatments in conjunction with Animal Care and Facilities staff.
  • Maintains appropriate records for all environmental compliance testing in accordance with institutional, local, state, and federal policies and regulations.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Animal Health, oversees aspects of the budget related to EQ operation and planning, including financial needs for equipment, contracts, permits, licenses, supplies, and maintenance.
  • Regularly re-evaluates standard operating procedures, incorporating the newest methods and innovations to maintain high environmental quality standards in collaboration with the EQ Program Officer.
  • Maintains EQ inventory and manages ordering for the EQ laboratories in Boston and the Animal Care Center in Quincy.
  • Supports cross-training opportunities for EQ technicians and cross-training opportunities for Animal Care staff in the lab to provide resilience and learning and development.
  • In collaboration with other Animal Care staff, investigates, records, and reports potential environmental causes of animal health problems.
  • Participates in research projects as needed
  • Performs other position-related duties, as assigned.
