About The Position

The Environmental Justice Intern at the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will work under the supervision of the agency’s Environmental Justice Liaison, contributing to the development and implementation of environmental justice project management and outreach work. The internship will focus mostly on supporting the establishment of DFG’s EJ programs in workforce development and community biodiversity, but also include other tasks as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Reasonable familiarity and awareness of public policy, program development and project management principles, statutory frameworks, and operational practices.
  • Experience researching current and historic institutional, government and philanthropic program and project activity involving public-facing initiatives.
  • An interest and ability to communicate clearly through writing, verbally and using other appropriate tools such as visual presentation.
  • General familiarity with, and/or coursework in one or more of the following\: the environmental sciences and stewardship, including data collection; recreation and outdoor activities, including hunting and shooting sports; and, public service communications, government, community development, workforce development, and public outreach, as well as related subject-matter.

Responsibilities

  • Compile a report containing options and opportunities to fund Environmental Justice Community Ambassadors within existing community environmental organizations and at community colleges and universities located within or disproportionately serving EJ communities within Massachusetts.
  • Collect information about existing and planned restoration, conservation, and recreation projects serving EJ populations, particularly those providing direct or indirect benefits to EJ populations quantitative and qualitative assessments.
  • Communicate with internal DFG staff and its external partners to coordinate the gathering of information.
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Justice Liaison and DFG staff to create a list of up to 10 Wildlife Management Areas, public facilities, and restoration sites, prioritizing the identification of those largely accessible to and/or benefiting EJ populations, expanding overall use of DFG amenities and programming.
