The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources mission is to cultivate a robust and equitable agricultural economy, promote a safe and resilient food system, and preserve a healthy environment for Massachusetts farmers, animals, and consumers. The Environmental Justice Intern will work to support MDAR’s Environmental Justice Team in implementing the EJ Strategy, with particular projects focusing on farmer support, engagement, language access, and communication to ensure meaningful access to MDAR programs and services. Key skills and knowledge gained in outreach support, providing language access, and supporting the development of materials.

Nice To Haves

  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Environmental Justice principles.
  • Experience with Microsoft suite of applications.
  • Ability to read, understand, and relay relevant information in an engaging and easy to navigate and understand manner to agency staff and key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with organizing, updating, and cleaning EJ Team spreadsheets and databases related to community partners, stakeholders, multicultural media and food businesses.
  • Provide outreach support by helping contact local businesses to gauge interest in sourcing culturally relevant local produce directly from Massachusetts farmers (with guidance and clear scripts/templates).
  • Provide logistical support for MDAR outreach during summer cultural events like the annual Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival.
  • Develop program materials with guidance and direction from MDAR’s Environmental Justice Team such as language access and digital literacy materials.
  • Support creation of an "MDAR 101" presentation and assist with multilingual support.
  • Support development of grant program inventories and public-facing information.
