About The Position

The Environmental Health Technician collects, assesses, segregates, and transports hazardous materials and waste from university generators to the universities Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF). Perform the day-to-day operations of the TSDF. Assist the Environmental Programs and Facility Coordinator in ensuring compliance with applicable EPA federal, state, and local regulations including but not limited to RCRA, Title V Air Permit, Brownfield Properties, and MSD Stormwater requirements. Act as an emergency responder for hazardous materials emergencies at the University.

Requirements

Associate's Degree in a field of science or a related field and two (2) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Must be able to pass medical examination and annual medical examination
Must be clean shaven at all times to allow immediate donning and seal of respirator.
Ability to wear personal protective equipment including safety glasses, face shield, safety toe footwear, chemical resistant gloves, flame-retardant laboratory coat and Level B protective equipment.
Must be capable of lifting containers up to 50 lbs.
Occasional, repetitive lifting is required.
Must be capable of moving cart carrying up to 300 lbs. and able to operate a drum dolly to move loads up to 500 lbs. over uneven surfaces and slopes not exceeding ADA requirements (1:12)
Manually move full 55-gallon drums (~500 lbs.) from spill containment pallets (6”) and re-position to for dolly use.
Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments including extreme heat or cold.
May be exposed to prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking.

Responsibilities

Collect, segregate, package, and label for transport hazardous waste from university generators.
Be knowledgeable and able to assess hazardous liquids and solids, to determine compatibility, combine compatible waste in approved containers, and prepare for shipping.
Conduct routine inspections (daily, weekly, and monthly) of the TSDF.
Ensure hazardous wastes are properly segregated and stored within TSDF.
Maintain and inventory TSDF materials and supplies to ensure service and response readiness. Submit resupply needs promptly to supervisor.
Carry out the university’s universal waste lamp and battery recycling program.
Conduct required inspections of the university’s Brownfield Properties.
Use DOT hazardous material regulations as guidance to maintain hazardous material transportation vehicle for hazardous material response readiness.
Respond to emergencies or incidents at the university that require DEHS assistance.
Provide skilled labor and technical support to other environmental health and safety programs
Possess valid driver's license and must be insurable under the University’s policy to drive vehicles
