About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. This position is with the Central Virginia Health District, which is part of the VDH, and focuses on fostering healthy and resilient communities through Environmental Health Services. The role primarily involves the onsite sewage and private well program, with additional duties in rabies prevention, campgrounds, and marinas. The person selected for the position must complete required training (provided by the agency) and obtain licensure from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation as a Master Onsite Soil Evaluator within 30 months of hire. The position will be based in the Bedford County office but may require occasional travel to other offices within the district. A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of biology, epidemiology, chemistry, mathematics, and statistics.
  • Ability to interpret complex federal, state and local environmental health policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Skill in communication, both oral and written; ability to deal with the public and resolve conflict in a regulatory setting.
  • Experience preparing thorough documentation and reports of regulatory activities.
  • Skill as an educator/trainer of environmental health principles.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce laws and regulations governing environmental health programs.
  • Ability to analyze information and make recommendations.
  • Ability to receive, understand and perform tasks as instructed by supervisor.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
  • A valid State Driver's License is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in environmental health, such as experience gained as an Environmental Health Associate.
