Learn more at https://www.jnj.com/innovative-medicine We are searching for the best talent for Environmental, Health, & Safety Summer Intern to be in San Diego, CA. The Intern term is from May to August, 2026. Full time requirement (40 hours per week). Purpose: At Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Group oversees site compliance with local and company EHS requirements. In addition, the EHS department develops and manages programs which ensure safe workplace conditions for all employees and demonstrates environmental responsibility towards surrounding communities. The EHS team supports the Research and Development operations and Site Services at our La Jolla facility. Under the mentorship of EHS engineers and managers, the intern will work closely with cross-functional teams to promote and foster a strong EHS culture, uphold compliance, and drive continual improvement. The EHS intern will engage in a variety of activities such as assisting with Biorisk management, performing risk assessments, preparing for site-wide inspections, creating content to drive continuous improvement, verifying laboratory safety and assurance practices, performing industrial hygiene exposure monitoring, and evaluating the effectiveness of training programs.

Requirements

  • Completion of Undergraduate Freshman year at an accredited University is required.
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Public Heath, Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, or related fields.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, which is reflective of all college coursework.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in teams.
  • Understanding of basic OSHA, Cal OSHA, EPA, and other EHS regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future.
  • Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing EHS policies and programs at the site level to ensure that workplace conditions comply with all local government and company requirements.
  • Facilitate routine EHS inspections and incident investigations.
  • Conduct EHS risk assessments of laboratory operations to implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Evaluate and control risks in EHS program areas (e.g., biological, chemical, and machine safety) and support EHS standards interpretation through team participation.
  • Review and recommend improvements to multidisciplinary EHS training content.
  • Assist EHS communications such as developing content and materials to support continuous improvement initiatives.
