This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities. As a senior member of our Environmental, Health and Safety team, you will provide advanced expertise and leadership in EHS support across multiple spaceflight systems and operations. You will lead the implementation and continuous improvement of comprehensive EHS programs including OSHA compliance, hazardous materials management, cryogenics safety, confined space protocols, environmental management, fall protection, PPE standards, hazard communication systems, crane safety, lockout/tagout procedures, and Process Safety Management. As an EHS Senior Engineer, you will serve as a technical authority, developing strategic safety initiatives, mentoring junior staff, and driving the evolution of our safety culture. You must demonstrate exceptional problem-solving capabilities for complex safety challenges, provide innovative solutions, and operate with significant autonomy while maintaining alignment with organizational objectives. You will be a key contributor in fostering a culture that emphasizes accountability, discipline, attention to detail, and proactive risk management at all levels. We are seeking an experienced professional to support operations across multiple shifts. Primary Responsibility: Supporting A-Shift operations while providing assistance across shifts A-Shift Schedule Options: Non-Launch Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Launch Schedule: Wednesday-Saturday, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM We're looking for an experienced professional who can adapt to both schedule types as operational needs require.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, and/ or bachelor’s degree in Engineering from ABET accredited school and 8+ years proven industry specific EHS experience in aerospace operations, chemical/delivery systems, or space and or missile systems, ground systems or similar industry. Relevant certifications will be considered to support years of experience required
  • Professional certifications required: CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent senior-level EHS certification
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in managing complex EHS programs in high-hazard industries
  • Expert knowledge of regulatory frameworks and demonstrated success in building compliant yet efficient safety systems
  • Advanced communication skills with the ability to influence at all organizational levels
  • Proven record of developing and delivering effective EHS training programs to various audiences
  • Extensive environmental permitting experience, including negotiation with regulatory agencies
  • Advanced proficiency with EHS management information systems and data analytics tools
  • Comprehensive understanding of Process Safety Management principles and implementation strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical requirements into practical operational controls
  • Experience leading incident investigations and implementing effective corrective actions
  • Must be able to pass a background check and obtain access to the base through the DoD Defense Biometric Identification System

  • 10+ years of experience in aerospace/defense industry
  • Professional certifications (CSP, CIH, CHMM, PE)
  • In-depth knowledge of Space Force 91-710 Range Safety Requirements
  • Recognized expertise in Fire/Life Safety Code (NFPA, IBC, IFC)
  • Comprehensive understanding of commercial space and DoD safety standards
  • Advanced training in Process Safety Management and Risk Assessment methodologies
  • Experience managing both environmental and safety programs simultaneously
  • Demonstrated success implementing comprehensive stormwater management programs
  • Experience leading emergency response teams for hazardous materials incidents
  • Proven track record of developing innovative EHS solutions for unique operational challenges
  • Experience interfacing with executive leadership and external stakeholders
  • HAZMAT, cryogenic, and/or Liquid Propellant emergency response team experience.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop, implement, and optimize comprehensive EHS programs aligned with Blue Origin's Environmental Health and Safety Manual and all applicable regulations from OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Policy Development: Lead the creation and revision of EHS policies, standards, and procedures, ensuring integration with business objectives and regulatory compliance.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Provide authoritative interpretation of current and emerging regulations, assess organizational impact, and develop strategic compliance roadmaps.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with senior leadership and department heads to integrate EHS considerations into project planning, design reviews, and operational decisions.
  • Program Management: Direct and oversee multiple EHS initiatives simultaneously, ensuring effective resource allocation, schedule adherence, and quality outcomes.
  • Risk Management: Develop and implement sophisticated risk assessment methodologies, establish risk tolerance criteria, and design multi-layered control strategies following the safety hierarchy of controls.
  • Incident Management: Lead complex incident investigations, conduct advanced root cause analyses, and develop systemic corrective action plans that address fundamental causes.
  • Audit Program Leadership: Design and oversee comprehensive audit programs, analyze trends from multiple data sources, and implement strategic improvement initiatives.
  • Technical Leadership: Deliver technical training and presentations to all levels of the organization, including executive leadership, on complex EHS topics and strategic initiatives.
  • Change Management: Drive cultural and organizational changes that promote safety excellence, overcoming resistance and ensuring sustained adoption.
  • Emergency Response Leadership: Develop, implement, and coordinate comprehensive emergency response plans with state and local authorities; serve as a technical authority during critical incidents.
  • Responsible for hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including DOT and RCRA.
  • Technical Oversight: Provide expert review of launch complex systems, facilities, and safety equipment; identify systemic issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Operations Support: Serve as the senior EHS advisor for Test and Flight Operations, making critical safety decisions during time-sensitive operations.
  • Process Safety Management: Provide technical oversight of PSM activities for all hazardous commodities across multiple systems and facilities.
  • Environmental Leadership: Lead environmental compliance programs, develop sustainability initiatives, and provide strategic direction on environmental risk management.
  • Regulatory Interface: Represent the organization to regulatory agencies, negotiate compliance agreements, and manage complex regulatory relationships.
  • Waste Management Systems: Design and optimize comprehensive waste management systems that ensure regulatory compliance while maximizing operational efficiency.
