Job Purpose: The Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator will lead BETA’s safe work practices and safety and environmental compliance efforts adhering to local, state and federal laws. This position is responsible for policy and compliance updates and training activities for new and existing employees. This person will work closely with BETA leadership and Safety Committee members to prevent workplace incidents and injuries and to help build a safety culture and mindset.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor’s degree in safety, environmental or health management or related field preferred
  • 2-5 years of prior experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and manufacturing safety standards; OSHA 10 minimum, OSHA 30 preferred
  • Familiar with local, state and federal regulations regarding water, wastewater, waste and hazardous waste storage and disposal
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint) required to maintain process and product documentation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to train and engage workers at all levels
  • Attention to detail and ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Safety Program Implementation: Develop, implement, and enforce site-specific safety programs, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance with OSHA standards and company safety protocols. Maintain OSHA required written safety plans. Responsible for all OSHA recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Site Safety Inspections: Conduct daily and weekly safety inspections identifying potential hazards and recommending corrective actions. Review plans and specifications for new machinery, equipment, and procedures to determine whether all safety requirements have been met. Monitor activities to ensure safety regulations are being followed.
  • Training & Education: Provide safety training for new and existing employees, including orientation, toolbox talks, and specialized safety training (e.g., fall protection, PPE use, hazard communication). Maintain all training records according to ISO standards. Assist with work instructions to ensure safe practices and compliance.
  • Incident Reporting & Investigation: Investigate accidents, injuries, and near-miss incidents to identify root causes. Prepare incident reports and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Transport injured employees to medical facilities for triage or follow-up appointments. Complete first report of injury with workers compensation carrier. Ensure adherence to work restrictions, when required.
  • Safety Audits & Compliance: Ensure compliance with all regulatory safety standards and prepare for third-party audits. Maintain records of safety training, inspections, and compliance activities.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Management: Monitor and ensure that all workers are using the correct personal protective equipment for the specific hazards of their tasks. Oversee the distribution and maintenance of PPE. Maintain all first-aid kits and manage relationships with outside vendors related to PPE, first aid and safety.
  • Emergency Response Plans: Assist in the development and execution of emergency response plans, including first aid, fire safety, and evacuation procedures. Conduct annual safety drills – fire, tornado, active shooter.
  • Safety Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, training, accident reports, and safety meetings. Prepare regular safety reports for BETA leadership. Maintain Safety Data Sheets throughout the facility. Prepare and maintain a job safety analysis for each BETA position.
  • Safety Culture Promotion: Foster a proactive safety culture on-site by engaging workers in safety discussions, promoting safe work practices, and addressing safety concerns promptly.
  • Collaborative Communication: Work closely with managers, supervisors, and workers to integrate safety measures into day-to-day operations and resolve safety issues as they arise.
  • Supervise the chemical conversion process and maintenance responsibilities as outlined in the Chemical Conversion SOP and other procedural documents
  • Supervise the wastewater treatment, sampling/testing and discharge process as outlined in procedural documents
  • Generate, submit, and maintain various safety and environmental reports, as required by BETA’s local, state, and federal permits (City Industrial User, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, and the Environmental Protection Agency (wastewater treatment, sampling and discharge reports, underground water sampling/treatment reports, air quality reports, hazardous waste reports, etc.)
  • Attend annual training to stay current in latest trends and local, state, and federal regulations
  • Conduct annual training to staff involved in the storage and disposal of waste and hazardous materials
