About The Position

The National Audubon Society is a leading nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to protecting birds and their habitats, working across the Western Hemisphere to achieve lasting conservation outcomes. With 800 staff and over 1.9 million supporters, Audubon is committed to ensuring a better planet for both birds and people. The Education internship is a paid internship designed to provide a range of administrative and programmatic experiences with a focus on environmental education. The intern will work on programs such as field trips and outreach to local schools, day camps, and community organizations, providing seasonal outdoor education. They will also be involved in Audubon Vermont's 8 weeks of summer camp (9am-4pm), where campers explore natural environments. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to host their own public programs or collaborate with AmeriCorps members and staff on community science, adult education, and children's programs. This internship is 15 weeks long (Summer 2026), requiring 20 hours per week, and is based on-site at Audubon VT and Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington VT.

Requirements

  • Commitment to Audubon’s organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation.
  • Course work that focuses on conservation, environmental education, biology, natural history, or a major in education with an interest in alternative forms of education.
  • Access to reliable transportation is preferred due to limited public transit options.
  • Experience and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Desire to teach nature-based programming in an outdoor setting, in all weather.
  • Interest in connecting people to nature and developing your own natural history, conservation, and nature mentoring skills.
  • Proven interest in working with children, demonstrated through coursework, volunteering, babysitting, or formal work experience.
  • Passion for nature and the outdoors.
  • Self-motivated and organized person able to stay on task without direct supervision and to be able to work on multiple projects or education programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous related experience in outdoor education a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver programing in-line with Audubon Vermont operations for young children and adults.
  • Create, maintain, and update curriculum, instructional materials, and teaching spaces.
  • Lead programs for people from diverse backgrounds and with lived experiences different from your own.
