About The Position

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [SC00] All employees who apply for a posted position must notify their supervisors that they have applied. This position, residing at any GCH location, is responsible for implementing environmental programs within WestPenn Power, PennPower, and Penelec for providing guidance and support to company personnel in complying with environmental regulatory requirements and corporate environmental policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences or related discipline or Associates degree or related discipline and related work experience or High School Diploma (or GED) and related work experience is required. Related work experience includes working in a position responsible for enforcing environmental regulations and practices.
  • Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving and teamwork skills.
  • Strong commitment to working safely and positively contributes to a strong safety culture
  • This role requires 24/7 response and weekly travel.

Nice To Haves

  • A broad diversity of environmental work experience in private industry, governmental and / or consulting is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as the principal interface with environmental agency regulators for the region; and is the representative of the corporate environmental department with the region.
  • Providing leadership and environmental training to other operating company employees engaged in spill planning and response, waste management and other environmental activities.
  • Ensuring all environmental training of operating company personnel is conducted in a timely and effective manner.
  • Ensuring that environmental programs applicable to the region are implemented in a manner that complies with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and corporate policy. These programs include but are not limited to waste reduction/management, storage tanks, spill prevention planning and response, water quality, hazardous materials, PCB management, air quality, asbestos and drinking water.
  • Advancing environmental compliance targets and providing environmental messages.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact within the region to address questions and to clarify practices related to environmental activities.
  • Disseminating information on environmental incidents, regulatory agency inspections, and developing local environmental issues in a timely manner.
  • Developing and updating local procedures to reflect current environmental requirements.
  • Acting as a liaison for environmental compliance reviews and regulatory inspections; and coordinate the implementation of all corrective actions.
  • Performing site inspections and assessments to monitor environmental compliance activities. Establishing compliance remedies when/where needed.
  • Coordination of hazardous/non-hazardous waste identification, handling, labeling, storage and pick-up activities.
  • Respond and coordinate spill clean-up and restoration activities.
  • Reviewing and updating site-specific spill prevention and emergency response plans.
  • Serving as a member of and regularly attends FirstEnergy's Environmental Coordinator meetings.
  • Maintaining environmental records and files.
  • Demonstrating a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Provide environmental leadership and oversight during emergencies and storm-response.
  • Travel to various off-site locations as well as FirstEnergy office locations, training facilities, and customer sites.
  • Acting in the lead role in engaging with the operating company for corporate environmental projects and initiatives.
