The primary purpose of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management Office is to develop and manage comprehensive environmental health, safety, and emergency management programs for the University. The primary role of the Environmental Affairs Manager is to administer the University’s environmental safety programs to ensure regulatory compliance and protect human health and the environment. There are several reasons why this position is critical for the University. First, many of the duties and functions of the Environmental Affairs Manager are required by law. This position manages the hazardous and universal waste programs and provides applicable training—all of which are required by regulatory standards. The position also supports research operations related to biohazards, controlled substances, and dangerous goods. Second, the Environmental Affairs Manager works with individuals across all areas of the University to ensure safe working and learning environments. Students and faculty are attracted to App State because of its safe, environmentally conscious reputation. Third, the Environmental Affairs Manager helps reduce significant financial costs associated with waste management through implementation of waste minimization and pollution prevention strategies, as well as appropriately managing hazardous materials in research and teaching laboratories to reduce significant risks of exposures and injuries.
