SCS Engineers is seeking an energetic, forward-thinking Environmental Scientist or Environmental Engineer to join their Portland, Oregon office. The ideal candidate should be organized, embrace teamwork, and have a desire for professional growth. This position is initially field-oriented, with environmental sampling and other field activities forming an important basis for understanding the science and career development in this field. The role involves a mixture of office and field work, with up to 100% field work during 5-10 weeks of the year, and generally 50% of each during the remainder of the year. Field days at job sites throughout Oregon and Washington are expected. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, environmental science, engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 3 months of relevant environmental and/or engineering internship, work and/or research experience
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently in both office and field
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office or similar software suites
  • Detail-oriented and a team player with good communication, technical writing, analytical, organizational, and time management skills
  • Valid driver's license with driving record in good standing

Nice To Haves

  • Progress towards professional certification (GIT, EIT) preferred, if applicable (geologists, engineers)
  • Experience with standard field equipment (multi-meters, pumps, controllers, etc.)
  • HAZWOPER training completed and up to date
  • Familiarity with water quality, environmental regulations, and environmental assessment/remediation

Responsibilities

  • A mixture of office and field work expected (up to 100% field during 5-10 weeks of the year; generally, 50% of each during the remainder of the year)
  • Coordinate and manage field work for multiple projects
  • Record data during field work, which could include, but not limited to soil characteristics, groundwater and surface water data, photographs, and summaries of visual observations through photography and written field logs in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Evaluate and interpret data recorded during field work for reporting purposes and to help determine future project needs in coordination with the project manager
  • Communicate with clients for field work coordination
  • Complete quality control reviews of lab data and other work products
  • Conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and Phase II Investigations following ASTM Standards
  • Multi-media sampling (soil, soil vapor, groundwater, indoor air, methane, surface water, sediment, etc.)
  • Oversee contractors during field activities for regulatory and safety compliance
  • Report writing and preparation of supporting documentation including Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments and groundwater and stormwater compliance reporting
  • Field days at job sites throughout Oregon and Washington can be expected with this position
  • Potential to manage small to mid-scale projects and provide support on larger projects
  • Communicate project status, schedules and compliance issues with project managers
