About The Position

Emerson Office of the Arts is seeking an eager, responsible, and dependable Entertainment Technician Emerson College’s Office of the Arts seeks an eager, responsible, and dependable Entertainment Technician to support the technical operations of UnCommon, a seasonal outdoor performance venue located on Boston Common, also known as the UnCommon Corner. The venue operates May through October and presents daily public programming across music, dance, poetry, comedy, and other live performance forms. The Entertainment Technician supports the smooth execution of audio and production elements for UnCommon programming. This role is highly artist-facing and requires flexibility, clear communication, and collaborative problem-solving in a fast-paced, outdoor environment. Technicians work closely with artists, production staff, and fellow technicians to adapt to evolving technical needs and ensure a welcoming, safe, and high-quality experience for performers and audiences.

Requirements

  • Experience with small scale digital mixers and mixing on a tablet (required).
  • Experience engaging outside theatrical/live event vendors (required).
  • High school diploma or equivalent required, college degree preferred.
  • Ability to manage and work with diverse teams
  • Ability to recognize the opportunities and limitations of the venue entertainment systems
  • Ability to be organized and produce clear and thorough documentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience setting up and operating sound systems.
  • Experience mixing live events and concerts of various sizes.
  • An understanding of signal flow.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to ensure a safe, clear and welcoming environment.
  • Ability to work outside and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends.
  • Requires ability to lift and move objects up to 50 lbs
  • Requires ability to sit/stand for long periods of time
  • Requires working in difficult physical positions
  • Requires travel less than 25% of the time

Nice To Haves

  • Outdoor festival/live venue technical supervisory experience (preferred)
  • Experience advancing and coordinating small outside events and performances (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Artist & Performance Support Work directly with artists and performers at the UnCommon Corner to set up, adjust, and support technical needs during rehearsals and performances.
  • Serve as a welcoming, on-site technical resource for artists, including assisting with questions, distributing water or credentials as needed, and helping artists adapt if technical needs change on the day of performance.
  • Respond flexibly and collaboratively to last-minute adjustments, artist requests, or on-the-fly problem-solving during live events.
  • Technical Operations Support daily setup, operation, and strike of audio and production systems for UnCommon programming, ensuring smooth transitions between scheduled events.
  • Set up and operate a small, reinforcement-based sound system and related production elements during live events.
  • Execute efficient changeovers between performances while maintaining safety and production quality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with house equipment and, when necessary, artist-provided equipment.
  • Venue & Compliance Ensure smooth operation of shows and events with attention to safety, hospitality, and production values.
  • Ensure venue operations comply with City of Boston guidelines, including sound pressure level (SPL) limits.
  • Communicate clearly and accurately with artists, production staff, and other stakeholders to support successful events.
  • Documentation & Reporting Populate and submit daily or shift reports, noting technical issues, operational observations, and performer-specific information to support future engagements and continuous improvement.
  • Set up and operate technical equipment based on paperwork and guidance provided by the Production Supervisor.
