About The Position

The English Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction that develops students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. Through diverse literary study and written communication experiences, the teacher helps students become thoughtful readers, effective writers, and informed participants in civic and cultural life. The teacher delivers instruction aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning , utilizing a variety of instructional strategies and technologies to support student learning. The role includes fostering an inclusive classroom environment, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with school staff and families to support student success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in English
  • Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License
  • Tuberculin skin test certifying the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis
  • Ability to use personal computers and instructional technology in the classroom
  • In-depth knowledge of English language arts content and curriculum
  • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and pedagogical practices for teaching English
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators
  • Ability to integrate technology and instructional resources to enhance learning
  • Ability to support diverse learning needs and adapt instruction accordingly
  • Work involves regular walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting within a classroom environment.
  • Exposure to routine conditions and hazards commonly found in a school setting.

Responsibilities

  • Teach secondary English courses using curriculum frameworks and instructional materials approved by the School Board.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that incorporate diverse learning activities and instructional strategies.
  • Provide opportunities for students to read widely and write for a variety of purposes and audiences.
  • Support development of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and study skills.
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies, instructional technologies, and learning resources.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to support diverse learning needs.
  • Demonstrate concepts and skills using instructional materials and technology.
  • Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments.
  • Monitor and document student progress in communication skills.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and productive classroom environment.
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to address student needs.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
  • Work collaboratively with counselors, administrators, and instructional staff.
  • Participate in curriculum development and instructional planning activities.
  • Maintain professional competence through district and self-directed professional development.
  • Supervise students during assigned activities within the school day.
  • Sponsor extracurricular activities such as debate, forensics, or student publications when assigned.
  • Participate in faculty committees and school initiatives.
  • Participate cooperatively in the district’s evaluation process in accordance with established guidelines.
