The School District of Clayton is seeking an English Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year at Clayton High School. Students in Clayton High School English classes value the social nature and power of language. Classes build a reading and writing community where students share meaning, influence others’ ideas, and create cultural connections with our shared literary heritage. Clayton High School students learn that language is a tool for gathering information and a way to construct and disseminate knowledge, create beauty, and inspire others. Students learn to recognize and use the structures and conventions of language as well as learn to struggle with ambiguity; through such struggle, thoughtful readers expand their personal perspectives and work to understand the unfamiliar. Clayton High School English students value language as a tool for reflection and exploration of personal and intellectual concerns, and in doing so become critical readers, writers and thinkers. The Successful Candidate: Is knowledgeable about high school philosophy and the developmental needs of adolescents and will be able to present the curriculum using a problem-centered approach. Demonstrates appropriate long and short-term preparation for classroom instruction. Is knowledgeable about a broad range of literature - both classics and contemporary. Holds high expectations for all students and serves as a facilitator of student learning. Possesses strong writing skills across genres. Has experience leading student writers through the writing process. Supports students in the development of individual goals that foster independence and efficacy in writing. Organizes and uses a variety of teaching techniques, strategies, materials, and technology to maximize the learning of each child, individually and in group settings. Assesses student progress, provides students and parents with specific feedback, and uses the results to adjust instruction as needed. Provides opportunities for academic support and challenge. Takes responsibility for teaching the District curriculum as outlined in the curriculum documents. Demonstrates an understanding of how knowledge is created, organized, and linked to other disciplines and life experiences. Keeps abreast of current developments in the field and continues to deepen understanding of the discipline(s). Establishes and maintains a functional, attractive, orderly, and safe classroom environment that is conducive to student learning and builds a sense of community. Our district values the ability to work with diverse students and colleagues; success in creating inclusive classrooms; and experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.
