About The Position

The Rhode Island College Upward Bound Program is a federally-funded program for college-bound rising 10th-12th grade high school students. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the high school graduation, college-going, and college graduation rates of program participants. The Upward Bound Summer Program is seeking part-time, temporary English: Literature & Composition Instructors. Qualified candidates must be able to teach Introduction to specific high school level courses in 1 or more of the following: Language Arts/ ELL , Introductory, Intermediate, First Year College Preparation, Senior Writing Seminar. Introduction to the Summer: The summer component focuses on developing a community with high expectations for academic achievement, behavior, personal development, and student accountability. Students reside in a residence hall and are supervised by a team of tutor counselors and professional counselors. Students take high school courses in literature and writing, mathematics, SAT prep, science, and foreign language. Field trips, recreational, social, and cultural activities are also offered. The Program is looking for individuals who are available to make the time commitment expected, support the philosophy and mission of Upward Bound, and the Code of Conduct (document to be provided if offered an interview). Overview of Literature & Composition Courses: The ELA instruction is intended to provide engaging, creative, and interactive instruction to program participants. Incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, student centered learning and multicultural perspectives using classic and/or contemporary texts (novels, plays) to provide a theme-based foundation for literary analysis, critical reading, discussion, writing conventions, specific writing assignments, and oral presentations. For Language Arts/MLL Level: Individualized interventions and small group activities will facilitate multi-language learners in gaining proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
At least two years’ formal classroom teaching experience with groups of low-income, first generation high school students.
At least two years’ experience developing course curriculum and objectives which are aligned to state standards.
