About The Position

The Upward Bound Summer Program is hiring part-time, temporary high school level English Literature & Composition Instructors. Qualified candidates must be able to teach Introduction to specific high school level courses in 1 or more of the following: Language Arts/ MLL , Introductory, Intermediate, First-Year College Preparation, Senior Writing Seminar. Introduction to the Summer: During the summer program, we focus on building a community that has high expectations for academic achievement, personal development, behavior, and student accountability. The students live in a residence hall and are supervised by a team of tutor counselors. They take high school courses in literature and writing, mathematics, science, and may participate in SAT prep, STEM , Foreign Language, and elective courses. In addition to these courses, the students will have the opportunity to participate in recreational, social, cultural activities, and field trips. The Upward Bound Program seeks individuals who can commit to expected timeframes and support our philosophy, mission, and Code of Conduct (document to be provided if offered an interview). Overview of Literature & Composition Courses: The ELA instruction is intended to provide engaging, creative, and interactive instruction to program participants. Incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, student centered learning and multicultural perspectives using classic and/or contemporary texts (novels, plays) to provide a theme-based foundation for literary analysis, critical reading, discussion, writing conventions, specific writing assignments, and oral presentations. For Language Arts/ MLL Level: Individualized interventions and small group activities will facilitate multi-language learners in gaining proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • At least two years’ formal classroom teaching experience with groups of low-income, first-generation high school students.
  • At least two years’ experience developing course curriculum and objectives which are aligned to state standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Teachers with RI secondary school/English teaching certification.
