About The Position

Spokane Falls Community College is seeking qualified candidates for consideration of employment as a full-time English Instructor for an annually contracted, non-tenure track position at the Pullman, Washington Campus . The SFCC English Department is a large, diverse department with a strong local presence in the area literary community. This instructor will teach the core composition courses, along with a variety of literature, English, and Humanities courses, based in Pullman, in all modalities (Hybrid, Online, Flex, and in-person), depending on program needs. SFCC seeks applicants with a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to collaboration, ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner, and experience working with people with diverse backgrounds and academic skills. The college strives for faculty who are subject matter experts and who are also knowledgeable about best practices in course design and delivery, innovative strategies, and instructional technologies that support teaching and learning in various modalities. This is an IN-PERSON position at the Pullman Center of Spokane Colleges located on the Washington State University campus in Pullman, Washington. Pullman is the most populous city in Whitman County, https://www.pullman-wa.gov/ . The city is known as a friendly, small-town college community with a lively arts and food scene, surrounded by rolling Palouse hills that make everyday life peaceful and scenic. Pullman is strong on community spirit and offers a welcoming feel, with good schools and exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities. SFCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Spokane Colleges. Requirements

  • An earned Master’s degree in English or a closely aligned field.
  • A specialty in Composition/Rhetoric or course work in composition pedagogy from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years equivalent teaching experience as the instructor of record in English or closely aligned field.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience and/or ability with various modalities (online, on ground, hybrid, flex).
  • Proficiency in classroom instructional technology and learning management system technology.
  • Experience teaching at a college/university or community college.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning, and working environment that honors diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to always promoting the welfare and best interests of students.
  • Ability to articulate the community college mission and values and how SFCC advances them.
  • Evidence of instructional excellence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success in classes comprised of students with a wide range of abilities.

  • Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • An earned Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric & Composition, or a similarly applicable field, and/or significant graduate coursework in composition pedagogy and rhetorical theory.
  • Experience or expertise in Developmental Education in reading and writing instruction and/or ALP (Accelerated Learning Program).
  • Experience with academic advising.
  • Experience teaching Humanities courses (For example, Hum 101: Intro to Humanities ; and Hum 107: Intro to Cultural Studies ).
  • A history of service to a department, institution and/or community; willingness to serve as an academic faculty liaison to Washington State University.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and instruct courses in English and composition through in-person, hybrid, and online modalities, as appropriate to program needs.  Courses assigned may include (but not limited to): Developmental English English 101 and 102 (Composition sequence) Literature Humanities
  • Utilize equity-minded practices in the development of course syllabi, assessments, and materials supporting the instructional process.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback.
  • Provide availability and accessibility to students in a manner appropriate to meet student needs, through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail accessibility or other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Work collaboratively, strategically, and respectfully with diverse colleagues and community members.
  • Participate in department, division, and college council or committees; participate in district, division, department, or general faculty meetings; in-service training; program and curriculum development; workshops or seminars.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the community college mission and values and how SFCC advances them.
  • Serve as the Faculty Liaison with Washington State University-Pullman.
  • Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities, follow established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, safety and health issues, and related administrative processes.
  • Participate in academic advising/consulting.
  • Advise student clubs or associations.
  • Actively participate in the department and college events promoting intercultural awareness, diversity, and equity.
  • Instruct courses in related disciplines based upon individual qualifications and expertise.
