Multiple Engineering Technician III positions will be filled from this posting. The Lead Project Inspectors serve on large and complex roadway and structure construction projects, conducting independent inspections of contractor operations to ensure compliance with all project requirements. Work includes interpreting and applying project plans, contracts, standards, and specifications, as well as using a variety of material testing devices and procedures to verify the quality and accuracy of construction activities. Duties involve performing both standardized and non-standardized material tests, compiling and analyzing field data, and performing complex surveying and inspection calculations necessary for verifying quantities and conformance. The Lead Inspectors supervise and train lower-level inspectors and technicians, review and approve their inspection and testing documentation, and ensures adherence to established quality assurance procedures. These positions are responsible for maintaining detailed project records and reports, verifying quantities and material certifications, and ensuring familiarity with all applicable plans, specifications, and standards. Additional responsibilities include performing office-related tasks such as reviewing pay records, haul tickets, force accounts, contractor payrolls, materials received, and payment estimates to ensure accuracy and compliance with contract requirements. The employees must obtain and maintain all certifications required for material sampling and testing. These positions requires coordination and communication with engineers, contractors, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders to ensure quality control, safety, and compliance. The selected applicant will be expected to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle and may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary to meet project needs. Work may include additional duties and responsibilities as assigned. The position requires the ability to establish and maintain positive communication with technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public, and to communicate effectively in a clear, concise, organized, and professional manner. The employee must be able to work safely in outdoor environments with exposure to construction site hazards such as heights, highway traffic, and uneven terrain. Moderate physical activity is required, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, standing, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The position may involve travel and assignment to any project within the Division. The employee is expected to apply NCDOT safety policies and procedures to all work activities. Safety toe shoes are required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
