POSITION NUMBERS 60016936 AND 60016898 WILL BE FILLED FROM THIS POSTING. You only have to apply once to be considered for both positions. This intermediate-level position will serve as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects, supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts. This position is responsible for monitoring contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications. Specific duties will include but are not limited to observing and documenting the contractor’s operations, making measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and performing standardized sampling and testing. The employee may be expected to either work independently or as part of a larger team of Department employees and consultant inspectors. Position will also ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Additional Expectations: In this position, you may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic. You will be expected to work outside in extreme temperature and weather conditions. You will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and be able to lift 50 pounds. You may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required for assigned project in Division 2. Duties involve operating a state-owned vehicle. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction
  • Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards and specifications
  • Experience in sampling and testing materials to evaluate acceptance.
  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgement to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
