About The Position

This position is located in Rockingham County in the Resident Engineer’s Office. Applicant will serve as a project inspector for roadway and structure construction projects while providing support to higher level technicians and engineers. Specific duties will include but are not limited to monitoring contractor’s daily operations for contract, plan and specification compliance, performing standardized sampling and testing, reviewing safety and environmental related items, performing moderately complex inspections of roadway and structure construction processes as well as supervising lower- level inspectors. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform sampling and testing. Additional Expectations: Successful applicant must be able to apply engineering concepts, interpret contracts and plans for highway construction, perform inspections, test materials to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications and maintain positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers and the public. Employee may be exposed to hazards including but not limited to high traffic volumes, heavy construction equipment, heights over water or traffic, extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions. Employee must be able to lift 40-50 pounds, navigate uneven terrain and work at night and weekends if necessary. Must be able to acquire various certifications pertaining to job duties. Safety toe footwear is required for this position. Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to acquire various certifications pertaining to job duties
  • Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards and specifications
  • Working knowledge of pay record book entries and material received reports
  • Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications
  • Working knowledge of computer equipment, (I-pads, desktop), software (HiCams and Share Point) and mathematical functions
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
