About The Position

This is an Engineering Technician I based in the Division 6 Southern Avenue Resident’s Office in Cumberland County. Position that supports higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and construction traffic control. Work functions may include entering specific project information into Sharepoint/Shareplus. Position duties include the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. Employees must be proficient in record keeping. Employees must be able to obtain and maintain certifications needed to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Employees may have to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employees must be able to perform a full range of calculations and computations. Additional Expectations: Applicant will have to operate a motor vehicle. Employees may be assigned to work on the survey party and perform surveying task as assigned or may be assigned to inspect roadway and bridge projects, all in accordance with established policies and procedures. Employees will need to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components. Applicants must have the ability to perform entry level technical work in a specific materials area or perform sampling, testing and inspection duties to determine specifications. Employees may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and have to climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. Employees will be expected to work outside in various types of weather, terrain and hours. Employee must be able to lift 50 lbs. Applicant will have to attend and pass certifications for various sampling and testing classes and will have to obtain and maintain QMS Asphalt and Concrete Testing Certifications. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform a full range of calculations and computations.
  • Ability to perform entry level technical work in a specific materials area or perform sampling, testing and inspection duties to determine specifications.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad, and software.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and /or construction surveying.
