About The Position

This is a repost, all previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This posting is for an Engineering Technician position in the Rowan County Maintenance Unit. This position will report to the County Maintenance Engineer and will assist in the inspection of commercial driveway permits, right-of-way utility encroachments, erosion control, traffic control devices, and roadway construction. This position performs routine inspections on a variety of projects to ensure general compliance with plans and specifications. Submits required records, reports & diaries within a specified time frame. Employee will be subject to both inside and outside extreme environmental conditions. In addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic.

Requirements

  • Applicant should have general knowledge of highway construction or design and general knowledge of mathematical functions.
  • Applicant should be skilled in the use of office equipment such as calculators, computers and drafting skills.
  • Applicant should have the ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures; take notes; prepare routine reports; proficient in record keeping and good communication skills.
  • Applicant must have a close visual acuity to read plan details, make accurate field measurements and inspect roadway and structure components.
  • Safety toe shoes are required.
  • The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • Pre-employment drug testing will be required.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
  • Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in inspecting contract work
  • Basic Knowledge of NCDOT driveway and encroachment policies
  • Basic knowledge of environmental permits for maintenance or construction activities
  • Experience in meeting, communicating and negotiating effectively with Contractors
  • Basic knowledge of erosion control plans and installation procedures
