Job Summary: We are seeking an enterprise-level Technical Fellow/Technical Steward for Structures to set direction, solve the toughest structural challenges, and scale structural engineering capabilities across the organization. This role blends deep expertise in structural component development, manufacturing, simulation, and validation with leadership in advancing digital and AI-enabled engineering methods to transform how we design, analyze, and deliver Caterpillar product structures that provide differentiated customer value in safety, durability, reliability, and sustainability.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Structural, Mechanical, Civil, Materials Engineering or equivalent
  • Extensive experience in structural design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing support.
  • Demonstrated expertise in fatigue, durability, structural integrity, simulation, and validation methods.
  • Strong ability to influence technical decisions through expertise and communication.
  • Experience owning and governing enterprise engineering standards and methods.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers and scaling expertise across organizations.
  • Proven leadership in digital engineering and AI-enabled transformation initiatives.
  • Active engagement with industry, academic, or professional engineering communities.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to support product development and resolve complex technical issues on structural components (including NPI, CPI, and other issue resolution activities).
  • Own, maintain, & update enterprise references for structures development (including design guides, training courses, Book of Knowledge, SharePoint site, etc.). This includes managing the IPs associated with these references.
  • Maintain strong industry and academic connections to understand advancements and trends in structural design and assessment, particularly for fatigue.
  • Facilitate the enterprise Large Structures technical community, including planning regular (historically semi-annual) meetings to share information and leading coordination of the bi-annual Structures Summit.
  • Manage Large Structures research portfolio, including project proposal prioritization, funding management, and reporting out as requested to the enterprise’s Competitive Product Development steering team.
  • Organize and deliver technical training courses to engineers across the enterprise, including Structural Weld Fatigue training
