About The Position

This role supports the Engineering Thinking Program at Town School for Boys by maintaining tools and equipment, facilitating student Open Studio sessions and developing instructional and safety resources within a K-8 mentorship environment. This role also assists with curricular development by collaborating with the Engineering Program Lead to integrate resources into the broader curriculum and supporting school-wide efforts to evolve teaching practices.

Requirements

  • Ability to design clear, engaging learning resources for both children and adults.
  • Experience with hands-on fabrication or a variety of shop tools; ability to troubleshoot, maintain equipment, and adapt to new technologies.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfort working with students in grades K-8, balancing encouragement and independence with appropriate oversight.
  • Collaborative mindset, with enthusiasm for being part of a dynamic school community.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in STEM education, engineering, fabrication, or a related field.
  • Experience in a school-based technical lab or teaching space.
  • Experience working with technologies and troubleshooting equipment such as the following: 3D printers, laser cutters, or CNC machines, etc.
  • Familiarity with safety practices and risk management in hands-on learning environments.

Responsibilities

  • Instructional Resource Development Collaborate with the Engineering Program Lead to integrate resources into the broader curriculum and support our school-wide efforts to evolve our teaching practices through methodologies such as Understanding by Design.
  • Design and develop self-guided materials (tutorials, project guides, safety checklists, etc.) to support independent learning during Open Studio.
  • Create systems for students to track their own learning progress and develop engineering competencies over time.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Program Lead to integrate resources into the broader curriculum and support our school-wide efforts to evolve our teaching practices through methodologies such as Understanding by Design.
  • Equipment & Machine Maintenance Maintain and troubleshoot studio equipment (currently includes 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mill, drill press, band saw, and fume extractors).
  • Manage regular preventative maintenance and coordinate with vendors for repairs as needed.
  • Oversee inventory of consumables, replacement parts, and safety supplies.
  • Open Studio Support Staff Open Studio sessions before school, during recess, and/or after school, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and productive environment for students to practice their engineering thinking.
  • Provide just-in-time support to students as they pursue independent projects, encouraging persistence, problem-solving, and safe tool use.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers to support student success within the studio.
  • Engineering Competitive Teams Provide mentorship and technical support for engineering competition teams, e.g. First Lego League (FLL), First Tech Challenge (FTC), SeaMATE ROV, and KidWind.
  • Assist students in applying engineering concepts, teamwork, and project management skills throughout the season.
  • Coordinate logistics such as competition registration, communication with event organizers, scheduling practices, and ordering parts or supplies.
  • Support students at competitions by supervising, troubleshooting technical challenges, and fostering a positive, resilient team culture.
  • Ensure safe and effective use of studio tools and equipment during all competition preparation and events.
