About The Position

Position will serve as an Engineering Specialist II in the Alamance County Construction Office. This is the highest level of advanced technical work serving as Division field representative in functional areas such as highway construction, construction inspection, engineering coordination and construction traffic control. Work will involve an extremely wide range of decision making and use of judgment. This position will supervise and train multiple technicians including Department employees and contract construction inspectors (CEI). Position reviews the work of other technicians for accuracy. This position will function as chief inspector conducting independent complex inspections and supervising lower-level inspectors and performing complex inspections of roadway and structure construction processes and materials to assure compliance with contract agreements, standards, and specifications. This position will review and process final estimates, compute contractor pro-rata time extensions, compute contract beginning interest dates, check pay record book quantities, and review as-built plans. Employee will be subject to hazards on highways and construction sites. Position is subject to work in a five-county area, depending on workload.

Requirements

  • Process working knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and construction methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Skill in operating survey equipment, computer terminals and drafting instruments.
  • Ability to understand, explain and administer contracts, interpret construction plans, provisions, standards and specifications.
  • Ability to train, coordinate and supervise subordinate employees, apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays and during inclement weather as required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor’s personnel and the public.
  • Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties.
  • The selected candidate will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Safety toe shoes required.
  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology or Survey Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and seven (7) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
