We are seeking a passionate and driven Engineering Manager to lead and grow our engineering team at Function. In this role, you will not only guide technical execution but also inspire and mentor engineers, creating an environment where innovation thrives. You’ll partner closely with product and design to deliver scalable, secure, and impactful software that empowers our members to access their health data in real time. This is a role for someone energized by building both teams and systems. You’ll shape the engineering culture, set technical direction, and help us scale with excellence as we revolutionize healthcare technology. If you’re looking for an easy job, a slow-moving corporation, or a predictable 9-to-5, this role isn’t for you. We’re seeking a leader with energy, creativity, and deep commitment to Function’s mission.

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop world-class engineers, fostering an environment of collaboration, ownership, and continuous learning.
  • Set the technical vision for projects while ensuring best practices in scalability, performance, and security. Guide the team in making strong architectural decisions and maintaining technical excellence.
  • Drive execution of key initiatives from conception through delivery, ensuring alignment with Function’s strategic goals and creating systems that scale as we grow.
  • Partner with product, design, and operations teams to align engineering outcomes with member experience and business priorities. Communicate clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Establish engineering practices that support high velocity without compromising quality. Champion Agile methodologies, CI/CD, and a culture of testing, measurement, and iteration.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and inspire the team to apply innovative solutions to healthcare’s toughest challenges.
  • 12+ years in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a formal leadership or management role. Proven success in hiring, coaching, and scaling high-performing teams, ideally in a startup environment.
  • Strong foundation in software engineering, with proficiency in Python and experience building large-scale distributed systems. While this role emphasizes leadership, you should be able to engage deeply with technical discussions.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) for scalable, resilient applications.
  • Passion for healthcare innovation and empowering individuals to better manage their health through technology.
  • Experience driving engineering processes that balance speed with quality, including Agile practices, test-driven development, and continuous integration/deployment.
  • Effective at leading and building culture in a distributed team environment. Strong communication skills and ability to build trust across time zones.
  • A continuous learner who challenges assumptions and inspires curiosity across the team.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, make decisions under uncertainty, and move projects forward even in the face of ambiguity. We value individuals who are self-starters and ready to act on opportunities and challenges alike.
  • Strong adaptability to changing business needs with a knack for building and optimizing processes. Your entrepreneurial mindset will be crucial in navigating the dynamic landscape of our industry, ensuring our platform remains competitive and responsive to user needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Effective communication is vital for cross-functional collaboration and ensuring alignment across our organization.
  • Comfort with remote work environments, demonstrating the ability to stay productive and connected with the team irrespective of physical location.
  • A willingness to question assumptions and a commitment to continuous improvement. Your openness to feedback and dedication to personal and professional growth will contribute significantly to our collective success.
  • A solid background in Data Engineering, demonstrating your expertise in managing, processing, and analyzing large data sets to drive decisions and innovations. Your ability to extract valuable insights from complex data will enhance our product offerings and operational efficiency.
  • Advanced skills in a range of technologies, including Python for backend development, React and React Native for frontend and mobile app development, GCP for cloud services, and Postgres for database management. Your proficiency in these technologies will be critical in developing robust, scalable, and user-friendly solutions.
  • Experience in building and deploying machine learning services, showcasing your ability to leverage AI and machine learning to solve complex problems and enhance our platform's intelligence and user personalization.
  • We highly value individuals with start-up experience, especially former founders or early engineering hires. This experience indicates a versatile skill set and an ability to thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments.
  • Knowledge of or experience with popular health technologies, such as Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch, and CGMs (Continuous Glucose Monitors). An interest in or experience with health and wellness technologies suggests a passion for leveraging technology to improve personal and community health outcomes.
