About The Position

This position is an Engineering Manager I position that will serve as the Division Project Team Lead as part of the Division Five Project Development Unit. This position will lead a team of project managers, technical experts, and supporting personnel. The Division Project Team is responsible for management and oversight of all aspects of the assigned projects including the scopes, schedules, and budgets. The work of the team includes extensive coordination with consultants, external stakeholders, other NCDOT units, regulatory agencies, and the public. The team oversees the development of all deliverables necessary in the preparation of a project for construction including planning documents, final construction plans, and all supporting studies and analyses. The Team Lead will also be responsible for managing the allocation and utilization of resources to successfully deliver all projects and for coaching and development of staff. Additional Expectations: Position requires the ability to lead multiple project managers and complete difficult assignments within specified time requirements. Communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, business associates and the general public. Direct the work of other engineers, apply engineering principles to difficult or complex engineering problems, and make sound recommendations and decisions. The ability to operate a State vehicle will be needed for this position. This position will have direct reports in Durham and Raleigh and will be splitting time between locations. State of North arolina registered Professional Engineer’s License preferred.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts, practices, and theories used in project development
  • Experience planning, developing, designing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects, independently or with minimal supervision
  • Experience interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies, and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel, and others
  • Experience making recommendations and decisions on simple or complex projects based on reviewing plans for completeness, compliance with engineering principles, standards, and design needs
  • Experience leading and maintaining positive working relationships with environmental agencies, public officials, consultants, contractors and NCDOT staff to find acceptable solutions to infrastructure project problems
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, counsel, and train other team members
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of six years progressive engineering experience including four years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors
