The New York Times is looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Games organization as the leader of the Games API Team. You will report to the Director of Engineering for Games Platform and lead a team of engineers that create, own, and operate the services, APIs, and tooling powering the NYT Games experience. You will work across departments to deliver and maintain the premier destination for digital puzzle games and help cultivate a culture of innovation and fun! NYT Games is a collaborative team that values inclusion, diversity, and personal growth. We combine product development with a distinguished suite of puzzles including beloved titles such as the NYT Crossword, Spelling Bee, Wordle, and Connections.   • Manage a diverse team of software engineers, ranging in career level
  • Foster an environment that boosts productivity and collaboration, and cultivate a DevOps culture of innovation and excellence
  • Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring, and feedback
  • Work with product owners, project managers, and other partners to develop and deliver a compelling roadmap that helps us meet our mission goals
  • Help establish and advocate for engineering best practices, ensuring our successful operation at scale
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • 2+ years experience as an Engineering Manager leading an API or backend services team with high traffic, low latency performance demands
  • 5+ years of full-time software engineering experience working with services technologies. We generally build APIs in Go and infrastructure in AWS
  • Understanding of API design principles, including REST, GraphQL, and gRPC, and solid experience with cloud technologies like AWS or GCP and their service offerings and tools
  • Expertise coaching engineers, helping them make an impact while growing in their careers, and experience facilitating continuous improvement and learning
  • Experience communicating updates and resolutions to customers and other partners
  • Familiarity with managing a backlog of competing opportunities, and aligning with partners
  • Experience managing API engineering teams with a DevOps culture
  • Demonstrated familiarity with and experience with the NYT Games product
