Requirements

  • General Experience: 5+ years of leading and managing platforms and platform teams.
  • API Gateway Platforms: Experience with managing and configuring API gateway platforms such as Apigee and Kong (as contrasted with consuming APIs exposed on same).
  • API Security: Solid understanding of API security best practices such as OAuth/JWT (or genuine desire to learn.
  • API/Microservices: Experience designing, developing and consuming REST APIs.
  • Cloud Platforms: Experience building and running applications on public cloud platforms, particularly AWS.
  • Traffic Management: Experience with policy management in API gateways including but not limited to traffic management, rate limiting, and load balancing.
  • Monitoring Analytics & SRE Best Practices: Proficiency in monitoring and analytics tools to track API performance and usage metrics.
  • Node.js: Experience with modern programming languages such as Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Lua and other scripting languages.
  • Testing Frameworks: Experience developing comprehensive unit, functional, integration and regression tests using a variety of testing frameworks.
  • DevOps Tools: Proficiency with DevOps tools and technologies such as GitLab, and Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform.
  • Troubleshooting: Strong, methodical troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve issues related to API gateways and integrations.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with F5, Nginx and / or Kong API Gateways
  • Relevant certifications in AWS and/or API management platforms like Apigee or Kong
  • Network configuration and network security knowledge

Responsibilities

  • API Platform Ownership: Oversee the evolution, support, and maintenance of the API gateway platform while ensuring security, reliability and operational excellence.
  • Business Process: Establish the necessary operational business processes to ensure that the platform is easy to use and that business priorities are appropriately triaged.
  • Leadership: Lead the platform team in support of Ally's Enterprise Gateway platform with a goal of streamlining process, increasing developer productivity and improving platform 'customer' experience.
  • Relationships: Build and nurture collaborative relationships with Allies across a broad set of teams including Ally Lines of Business and Functional areas.
  • Best Practices: Develop API standards and best practices for the enterprise in collaboration with other teams. Create reusable patterns and components to ensure compliance and enforce policy as it relates to the space.
  • Support: Interact with development teams across the enterprise to support the adoption of the API gateway. Collaborate on issue resolution and triage. Provide support for questions/clarifications from consumer teams.
  • Platform Management: Serve as point-of-contact for monthly, quarterly, annual and ad-hoc assessments, attestations, audits and access reviews.
  • Performance Monitoring: Routinely monitor and manage cost/performance of the platform and proactively implement improvements as identified.
  • Security Management: Ensure the security of the API gateway platform by implementing best practices and keeping up-to-date and ahead of both the latest security trends/threats and Ally security policies.
  • Mentorship and Training: Provide mentorship and guidance to engineers and other platform team members to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategic plans for the API gateway platform to align with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate effectively (written and orally) with interested parties, including senior management, to provide updates on platform status, project progress, and any issues or risks.
  • Humility: Confident yet humble enough to admit that you don't know everything and cautious enough to ensure it's done right the first time.
  • Attitude: A collaborative, can-do attitude with a desire to make things better.
  • Multi-tasking: Be prepared to muti-task and switch contexts at a moment's notice.
