About The Position

Engineering Leads in BIW’s Design Services Mechanical Engineering group perform duties and provide leadership and supervision to teams of Engineers, Technicians, and BMDA Designers to accomplish BIW LYS contract tasking and support for all DDG 51 class tools. The Systems Development and Controls Engineering Lead will be charged with oversight of SDC projects, they will oversee design team system and tool performance. This role will provide strategic input into future infrastructure and continuous improvement plans. Works with our Design and Engineering & IT teams across multiple programs to provide the highest level of support and tools possible. The Design Services SDC Engineering Lead is a leadership role accountable to Mechanical Engineering Management. This position demands a proactive leader who can communicate extremely effectively and manage our unique projects and teams. This position will interface regularly with BIW Management and other GD business units such as Electric Boat. The Engineering Lead will ensure compliance with safety, quality, technical and performance standards and have goals to further develop and expand Design Services' level of support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering is Required.
  • Expert knowledge of Design Services Detail Design and change process is required.
  • SQL and strong database architecture required.
  • Strong technical understanding of BIW systems IXD, and MACPAC 3D Viewer required.
  • Ability to understand and interpret technical requirements.
  • Minimum 10 years of technical engineering experience required; breadth of shipbuilding and marine engineering experience is preferred.
  • 3 years of technical supervisory / project lead experience required, including demonstrated technical / project management skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire teams of engineers, technicians, and associate engineers.
  • Understands the elements of ship design.
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated management, project coordination and leadership skills required. Strong written, oral communications and organizational skills required.
  • Proficiency with computers including SQL, VBA, C++ Microsoft suite of products required.
  • Ability and willingness to work in and promote a true team environment.
  • Successful experience in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.

Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership:
  • Be a safety leader for your team and ensure that each person leaves in the condition they came in.
  • Ensure all safety training is completed on time.
  • Program Execution:
  • Responsible for engineering Projects and on-time delivery for development and mgmt. approved initiatives.
  • Engineering Management:
  • Lead efforts, including development, test procedures, and work instructions that support roll out.
  • Set appropriate team expectations for completion of goals.
  • Ensure accountability of task and goal completion.
  • Manage processes to ensure that quality, schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.
  • Perform supervisory and administrative duties including resource management, employee development, safety, performance evaluations, progress reporting, assist with hiring, honoring labor contracts, employee time verification, and BMDA contract administration.
  • Training and Development:
  • Provide technical training, guidance and leadership to assigned personnel.
  • Establish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions for engineering processes.
  • Provide onboarding and mentor plans for new engineers entering the team.
  • Team Collaboration and Communication:
  • Ensure proper communication is maintained among the team and with other groups both internal and external (GD Business units).
  • Interface with, and support, Engineering, Program Office, Design, Estimating, Contracts, Materials, Planning, Manufacturing, Navy, and other customer organizations as required.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Ensure proper up to date process documentation for all team processes.
  • Utilize BIW BOS principles to review performance and remove waste from processes.
