The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Design & Engineering Services is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex position located in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving! Engineering Assistant 1: You will perform entry/trainee-level engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects under the general direction of a registered professional engineer. Typical design elements include both new construction and rehabilitation of existing: Storm drain systems; Curb and gutter; Sidewalks; Street lighting systems; Traffic signal systems; Navigation aids; Roadways, runways, taxiways, and aprons; Signage; and, Guardrail. Work includes assisting with the preparation of engineering studies, development of various details and portions of projects and assisting with the preparation of contract documents (Engineering calculations, Plans, Specifications and Estimates). Engineering Assistant 2: You will perform mid-level engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects under the general direction of a registered professional engineer. Work includes assisting in the research, development and final production of project plans, specifications, estimates and other engineering documents. Engineering Assistant 3: You will lead the engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects under the general direction of a registered professional engineer. Work includes developing initial concept-level designs, vetting concept designs with the public and resource agencies for input, and finally producing construction-ready project plans, specifications, quantities, estimates, and engineering documents. Typically, this position is the lead designer on projects with low to mid-level complexity and assists as a specialist on complex projects.   • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • Requires occasional travel to project sites within the coastal region of Alaska (several trips during Spring/Summer/Fall). This may include flying to remote communities in small aircraft with infrequent need for overnight stays with minimal accommodations. Includes site inspections which can occur in adverse weather conditions.

  • Engineering Assistant 1: Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
  • Engineering Assistant 1: An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
  • Engineering Assistant 2: Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
  • Engineering Assistant 2: One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Engineering Assistant 2: An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
  • Engineering Assistant 3: Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
  • Engineering Assistant 3: Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Engineering Assistant 3: An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
