About The Position

Washington County is currently hiring for an Engineering Aide I Traffic Temp. This position  provides skilled or technical skilled labor collecting and analyzing traffic data, creating traffic safety and operations reports, and assisting with traffic sign and signal maintenance for the Transportation Division. Work is done under varying degrees of supervision. Education and Experience:  Must be at least 18 years of age, ability to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions; engineering college background or civil technology at a technical college desirable; must have own means of transportation; individuals operating a motor vehicle for county business must possess a valid driver's license. Offers of employment will be contingent upon successfully passing a criminal history and fingerprint background check prior to beginning employment with Washington County. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of common tools, methods and equipment used in Engineering and Surveying. Ability to understand and follow basic instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under possible adverse weather conditions and/or in close proximity to moving traffic. Ability to meet and deal with the public in a friendly, professional manner. Ability to report to work on a regular and timely basis. Must wear prescribed clothing and/or personal protective safety equipment. MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:  Functions for this classification are dependent of the specific work assignments being filled and will be provided when vacancies are filled. Collects and documents traffic data using road counters, digital count boards, handheld radar units and manual observations and ensures proper data entry and storage; Prepares traffic safety and operations reports including sight distance observations, crash history diagrams, speed studies, signal operations studies, and traffic volume reports; Assist other staff with inspection and documentation of temporary work zone traffic control; Assist other staff with minor sign maintenance and inspection of roadway striping operations; Assist Traffic Signal Technician on minor traffic signal maintenance operations. Perform other related duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The essential functions for this position are #1-5 as stated above. WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed 60% outside, 40% inside. Work performed outside involves exposure to seasonal elements including heat, wind, humidity, sand, rain and cold water. Includes lifting up to 75 pounds with or without assistance. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to: Pick-up trucks, sedans, survey van, traffic count van, computers, telephone, cellular phone, 2-way radio, survey equipment and traffic counting hardware. Duties include being able to perform the following movements on an occasional to continuous basis; walking, lifting, bending, turning/twisting, pushing/pulling, kneeling, climbing, reaching and grasping, using an 8 pound  maul. Additional physical/mental requirements may not be listed above, but are inherent in performing the position's essential functions. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Nice To Haves

  • Successfully completed any college-level Traffic/Transportation Engineering courses
  • Previous experience in Traffic Operations with Washington County or similar experience in another county
  • Previous paid experience working near moving traffic and in field data collection
  • Engineering college background or civil technology at a technical college desirable
