About The Position

Supports the institution's engineering projects and initiatives, utilizing technical expertise and problem-solving skills to support the development and maintenance of various engineering systems and research facilities. Salary Range: $57,900 - $70,000 per year; DOE The Biodesign Institute is seeking an Engineer who will support the design, operation, maintenance, and optimization of laboratory and research engineering systems. This position performs technical engineering and instrumentation work under the guidance of senior or lead engineers and in collaboration with faculty, researchers, and technical staff. The Engineer will apply established engineering principles and procedures to support research programs, maintain critical equipment, and assist in the development and implementation of automated and specialized systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience with laboratory automation, robotics, or assay systems.
  • Experience supporting biomedical, diagnostic, or research environments.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring systems and critical storage equipment.
  • Familiarity with quality systems, audits, and CAPA processes.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the design, installation, testing, calibration, and documentation of engineered systems, components, and laboratory equipment.
  • Supports the development, integration, and maintenance of automated and electromechanical systems, including robotics, motion control, fluidics, and instrumentation.
  • Performs routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance on critical research and laboratory equipment.
  • Provides setup, qualification, troubleshooting, and repair services for complex scientific and diagnostic equipment.
  • Coordinates with faculty, researchers, vendors, and engineering staff to support research objectives and resolve technical issues.
  • Assists in evaluating equipment performance and recommending improvements or modifications.
  • Maintains operational records, service documentation, and regulatory compliance documentation.
  • Interfaces with equipment manufacturers and vendors to source parts, arrange service, and procure equipment.
  • Supports asset tracking, equipment usage monitoring, and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Assists with training users on proper operation and care of laboratory and shared equipment.
  • Participates in quality assurance, audits, and corrective/preventive action activities as assigned.
  • Contributes to maintaining temperature monitoring, environmental control, and data-logging systems.
  • Provides technical support for laboratory infrastructure, including freezers, incubators, centrifuges, vacuum systems, and analytical instruments.
  • Works collaboratively with engineering and technical staff to resolve system errors and improve reliability.
