About The Position

The Engineer role at Courtyard Downtown Norfolk is centered on providing clean, friendly, well-organized, and safe hotel environments for guests. This position is integral to achieving high guest satisfaction, maintaining spotless cleanliness, ensuring product consistency and quality, and fostering teamwork. Key responsibilities include positive guest interactions, maintaining hotel knowledge, and adhering to communication standards. Specifically, the Engineer is responsible for responding to and documenting general repair requests, executing preventative maintenance programs for rooms and public spaces, and ensuring compliance with safety and health codes, particularly for pools and spas. The role also involves conducting regular property walks to identify and address maintenance needs and keeping all maintenance areas tidy.

  • Ability to arrive and clock in on time for every shift and clock out at the scheduled time, unless directed otherwise.
  • Never work while off the clock.
  • Ability to clock in/out for breaks at designated times.
  • Ability to provide sufficient notice when calling out for a scheduled shift.
  • Physical ability to perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, standing, walking, repetitive motions, and lifting 50+ lbs.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical, Trade or Vocational school degree.
  • At least 2 years of work-related experience in a commercial facility, hospitality or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Greet guests happily upon arrival and throughout their stay with a smile.
  • Use guests’ names whenever possible.
  • Contribute to great guest satisfaction scores.
  • Handle challenging guest situations with hospitality and urgency.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of hotel facilities and amenities.
  • Support all groups and events at the hotel.
  • Understand relevant technology for the role.
  • Answer all incoming calls with friendly service.
  • Keep all work areas, front and back of the house, clean and well-organized.
  • Assist in cleaning guest rooms and public spaces as needed.
  • Complete all operational checklists accurately and on time.
  • Ensure shift handover reports are accurate and timely.
  • Wear a clean, approved uniform, be well-groomed, wear a nametag, and smile.
  • Maintain clear, honest, and professional communication with team members.
  • Be willing to adapt beyond traditional role to meet business and guest needs.
  • Collaborate with all team members to create a welcoming and positive workplace.
  • Respond to all guest requests for general repairs.
  • Confirm and document completion of repairs through the electronic work order platform.
  • Keep room and public space Preventative Maintenance work up to date and on schedule.
  • Follow all safety measures according to approved work checklists.
  • Ensure pool and spa follow area health codes.
  • Report emergency or life safety concerns to immediate supervisor and General Manager.
  • Respond to emergency situations using Material Safety Data sheets.
  • Conduct full property walks at the beginning and end of scheduled shifts.
  • Note, document, and complete any maintenance needs identified during property walks.
  • Keep all maintenance areas clean and well-organized during and prior to departure.
