The API Gateway Platform Engineering team ensures the reliability, availability, and performance of the organization’s Apigee Hybrid API management platform, operating and supporting the core gateway infrastructure exclusively on Linux systems. This role focuses on maintaining platform health, executing upgrades and patches, troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues, enhancing security and observability, and implementing automation to improve operational efficiency. Engineers in this team play a critical role in sustaining a secure, scalable, and high performing API gateway foundation while collaborating with architecture and integration teams on enterprise API initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in CIS, Computer Science, or equivalent experience in Systems Engineering / IT
  • 3+ years supporting enterprise-grade applications or platforms in production environments
  • Strong operational understanding of API management platforms, preferably Apigee Hybrid
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Linux Operating Systems
  • Experience managing and supporting distributed systems, containers, or Kubernetes‑based deployments
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, TLS, DNS, load balancing, routing)
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD concepts and tools (Git, Jenkins, Artifactory, etc.)
  • Familiarity with observability stacks (Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or similar)
  • Experience performing root cause analysis, troubleshooting platform-level issues, and driving long-term remediation
  • Functional scripting abilities (Bash, Python, or similar) to automate operational tasks
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment
  • Strong communication skills, capable of interfacing with operations, architecture, and development teams
  • Customer-focused mindset with dedication to delivering stable and secure platform services

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Apigee Hybrid runtime components, including Router, Message Processor, Synchronizer, and Cassandra-based data stores
  • Experience operating API gateways in hybrid or multi‑cloud environments
  • Understanding of API security models, including OAuth, mTLS, JWT, and key/token management
  • Experience implementing and supporting platform upgrades, versioning strategies, and patch management for API gateways
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes objects (Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, Secrets) and experience running workloads on GKE, EKS, or similar
  • Familiarity with service mesh concepts (Istio, Envoy) and API traffic patterns

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, and implement enhancements to the API gateway platform and supporting infrastructure
  • Optimize gateway and supporting components for maximum availability, performance, and scalability
  • Respond to and support production operations in a 24/7 environment, ensuring uptime and reliability
  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure level and platform level issues proactively and reactively
  • Administer, maintain, and operate Apigee Hybrid components across Linux based environments
  • Manage platform configurations, runtime versions, patch levels, certificates, and upgrade paths
  • Perform technical analysis, identify root causes, and implement durable solutions to platform issues
  • Partner with architecture, security, SRE, and development teams to support enterprise API initiatives
  • Educate and mentor team members and operations staff on platform functionality and tooling
  • Participate in a weekly on call rotation to support after hours operational events and planned change activities
